Humane Society of the United States
Journalists Helen Jones, Fred Myers, Marcia Glaser and Larry Andrews founded a non-profit organization in the US that’s based in the capital called Humane Society of the United States or more popularly known today as HSUS. This is to stop the animal cruelty they have seen personally on national scope and also, to deal with animal welfare problems by means of incorporating strategies that are beyond the resources and abilities of local organization.
As a matter of fact in 2013, HSUS is deemed as one of the biggest charities in operation in the US according to Chronicle of Philanthropy. Actually in 2001, 5 big problems in animal cruelty such as factory, animal fighting, farming, fur trade, puppy mills and wildlife abuse are the main target of their major campaigns. The organization is dealing with wide range of animal problems that consist of companion animals, horses, wildlife, farm animals and other equine and animals similar to testing, research and education.
The Humane Society is reported to rake in a revenue of 129 million dollars as well as net assets of 215 million dollars as of the 31st of December year 2014. HSUS pursues global work by partnering with Humane Society International that has listed staff members of 17 nations as of 2013. Some well known affiliates are Doris Day Animal League and Fund for Animals which were founded by Doris day and Cleveland Armory respectively. Together with its affiliates, the Fund for Animals, HSUS operates animal sanctuaries across 5 states.
The Humane Society of the United States isn’t running on local shelters or oversees local animal care and control agencies. Instead, it promotes the best practices and supports such entities across the country while offering wide range of services. HSUS formed right after schism has surfaced in American Humane Association over rodeo, pound seizure and other policy issues.
Whether you believe it or not, the first four employees of HSUS which were also active in leading other existing national and local groups are Marcia Glaser, Fred Myers, Helen Jones and Larry Andrews.
Basically, these people firmly believed that new form of organization helps in fortifying the American humane movement and they have organized Humane Society of the United States functioning as the National Humane Society based in Washington, DC to make sure that it plays an integral role to develop animal welfare on national level.
With the proactive approach of Humane Society of the United States in protecting animals, it is not a big surprise why they’re backed by other organizations and locals as well.
